Matched since April 2023, Ja’Zayah (LS) and Jennifer (BS) share a bond built on consistent meetings and creative experiences. Jennifer, inspired by her own childhood mentors, has introduced Ja’Zayah to unique activities like yoga, salt caves, arts and crafts, and festivals. Together, they’ve attended Black History events, Christian concerts, and even explored a dinosaur dig and the aviation museum. Jennifer’s goal is to expose Ja’Zayah to experiences she wouldn’t normally have, such as Christmas light displays, pumpkin patches, and chocolate-themed outings. Their plans include exciting activities like glass blowing and creating fairy gardens, much to the delight of Ja’Zayah and her parent/guardian.
Over the past year, Ja’Zayah has gained confidence and started voicing her opinions, from choosing where to eat to making new friends in her neighborhood and other grades. Jennifer has noticed this growth and celebrates Ja’Zayah’s blossoming self-assurance. For Jennifer, the match has been equally rewarding, inspiring her to incorporate their shared activities into her own life and workplace. Jennifer’s dedication to Ja’Zayah, coupled with her excellent communication with Ja’Zayah’s parent/guardian, has made this match a shining example of the transformative power of mentorship.
For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.
